Apple Picking

L.L. Bean

One of the many things this Texan fell in love with when she first moved north? Apple picking. It sounds silly because most of the friends I’ve made over the past years have frequented orchards their whole lives. Yet despite having been apple picking four or five times now, I still have the excitement of a small child as we drive out of the city for this fall activity.

My boyfriend and I + another couple headed up to Homestead Farm in Poolesville, MD (about a 45 minute drive from DC) on Saturday and…you guessed it– picked some apples. The four of us all went to Colgate and therefore love this get-out-of-the-city-and-go-rural thing. The two of us also shamelessly matched with our mutual love for L.L. Bean flannels (and navy vests).

The vines weren’t as high as they are in upstate NY (#comparing #judging) but there were tons of apples left to be picked. Stay tuned for a recipe coming next week…currently torn on what to make with everything we took home! Any requests?

Visitors aren’t allowed to bring pets, so I think this guy belonged to the farm. Look at him go!

I mean, what’s a real farm without a petting zoo-like thing?

This turned out to be the perfect morning and made even better by a stop at Chick Fil A on our way home (they’re opening the District’s first one this fall, but it continues to be such a treat to stop when someone has a car).

Seriously, if you have any doubts about fall and how it’s nothing short of perfect, go apple picking! Preferably in your favorite flannel ;)

Ahhh, I’m so jealous!!! I don’t think there’s anywhere nearby I can go apple-picking, so I’m living vicariously through you. Love the photos!! xo

Looks like such a fun day, Monica! Love the ensemble too – classic, and perfect for fall!

Just stumbled on your blog and wanted to say I love Homestead Farm! My boyfriend and I went there this year and I totally agree with you — Being from Arizona, I never had the apple-picking childhood experience, so as an adult I get super giddy about it. Love your pictures (and your flannel)!

Hi Heather! Thank you so much for stopping by and for the sweet words :) Always glad to hear from someone else who appreciates the novelty of apple picking…hope you get to make it a tradition!

Homestead Farm is my favorite!! When I used to live in Arlington, we would go almost every season – apples in the fall, Christmas trees in the winter, flowers in the spring, and berries in the summer. Best place ever.

It’s awesome how these farms have things all year round! Their Christmas trees were so cute and little right now..definitely makes me want to go back!

  2. […] A trip to the orchard = tons of apples = me trying to create something that’s cute, socially acceptable to eat for all meals of the day, and uses very few ingredients. Enter: a mini honey apple tart that tastes just as good as it does for breakfast as it does doused in ice cream post-dinner. These are so easy and would be perfect for a holiday brunch or Thanksgiving appetizer. You could totally add brie to take this to the next level…that’s what I’ll be doing next time! Because what’s better than melted brie + honey + apples in the fall? […]
